Even though I’m a big believer in setting audacious goals, I always have a plan B in mind as well, even if it’s way in the back of my mind. The key, of course, is to make sure plan B doesn’t become the default position or completely sabotages plan A (A = audacious, of course). Good can become the enemy of great, as you well know. This applies to all areas of life, including relationships, business, career, hobbies, health, etc.
For a plan A lesson, if you’ve ever studied history, perhaps you’ll recall that the Spanish acquisition of the Aztec Empire in 1521 was one of the most important campaigns in the Spanish colonization of the Americas. I’ve heard people refer to this story as a life lesson for all of us, even today. One of the events was when Cortez grounded his 11 ships to prevent his colony from turning back from the new world. He had invested considerable resources and took on large debt in order to build those ships and undertake the expedition.
Sometimes that’s what it takes to achieve your audacious goal. Have you had any moments like this where you sacrificed much in order to focus on a goal? Read the rest of this entry »

How can you live a richer life? I don’t believe one has to have a lot of money to be rich. One can be rich in many ways. Riches can include family, close relationships, meaningful work and more.
Those are all wonderful things, of course. But today I will focus on the three things that will help you live a richer life that aren’t dependent on other people and are things mostly in your control: health, wealth and inner life.
Aristole said that a life of virtue is the chief ingredient of happiness and that adequate health (goods of the body), adequate wealth (external goods and property) and goods of the soul (wisdom and virtue) were necessary for this kind of rich and happy life.
Let’s begin with health. I know many people who are financially secure but don’t take care of their bodies and have chronic back and knee problems, heart disease, are very overweight, etc. They aren’t truly “rich” even though they have a lot of money.

If you are like most people, whether in your twenties or eighties, there are likely a number of areas in your life that leave you feeling disappointed. Are you satisfied with every aspect of your life? Are you living the life of your dreams, and thriving, day to day, month to month, year to year – or is your life a struggle. Are you just surviving or getting by?
Ask yourself these 10 questions and answer yes or no.
1. Do you have the financial freedom you desire? Is your family’s financial future secure, and well able to ride out economic downturns?
2. Are your family relationships everything that you desire them to be?
3. Is your health, fitness level, weight and energy at an optimal level?
4. Do you love what you do and are you using your talents to their maximum?

Join any group of people, and try and determine each person’s life purpose. You will most likely find it impossible!
Better still, state your life purpose succinctly to each person, and ask them to do the same: to articulate their life purpose.
The likely result? I’ll bet that very few of the people in the group will be able to articulate their purpose with complete clarity.
Can you?
Have you ever wondered why it is so difficult to define your own life purpose? Would you like to know how to do it? In a minute I will show you two easy steps to find it.

Last Friday, I attended the funeral of Zafar Abid, a friend and member of my design team, who passed away with cancer at the young age of 33. The day of his funeral service was also his 33rd birthday.
My team and I were especially saddened at losing a close friend and a wonderful human being, but our heart goes out to his parents, who had lost another son due to illness not so long ago. May Zafar rest in peace, and may his family have the courage to bear their loss with grace.
The funeral gave me pause to think about how precious and fleeting life can be, and two things came to mind immediately.
The first is to embrace and live each day to its fullest. And the second is to live a life of purpose.
Let me share my views and some suggestions on living each day to its fullest. In a future blog, I will discuss living a life of purpose. Read the rest of this entry »

Think of your life as a building project. No architect would attempt to build something without a blueprint, so why would you approach your life plan without one? The details may change over time but it will always remain the building block on which to focus your energies and base your decisions.
The best way to start creating your own blueprint? Take stock of where you are right now. Start by writing down the ten most important categories in your life. They can be career, relationships, spirituality, health, or whatever is important to you.
Next, make two columns next to each category. In the first one, write down where you are right now in your life in that area. Be brutally honest. For the second column, close your eyes and think of where you’d like to be in the three years if no obstacles were in your way. Think hard and big. No idea is too big or impossible and the more uncomfortable or daunting the vision, the better. MORE>>>
